My Body, the Weather, and the Quiet Conversation Between Them

My Body, the Weather, and the Quiet Conversation Between Them

There are days when my body seems to sense change long before the sky shows it. A shift in the weather, rising humidity, or an approaching cold often brings stiffness, aching joints, and a heaviness that settles deep within. It’s as if my body is quietly responding to forces beyond what I can see.
Among some of my fellow arthritis heroes, there’s an unspoken understanding about moon days. We rarely need to explain them. When the moon is full, some of us feel it—heightened pain, swollen joints, restless sleep, and a fatigue that feels different from the usual. Whether science fully explains it or not, our lived experience tells us it’s real. The moon pulls at more than just the tides; it pulls at our bodies too.
For me, this sensitivity deepened after the tsunami. That experience affected me profoundly—not just emotionally, but physically. Since then, my body reacts more intensely to environmental shifts, as though it remembers upheaval in ways my mind doesn’t always articulate. On certain days, the pain feels less like a symptom and more like an echo—of shock, of survival, of everything my body had to hold on to.

I used to resist these days, frustrated with my body for slowing down. Over time, arthritis taught me a softer way to respond.

Now, when weather changes or moon days arrive, I lean into care rather than control. I warm my joints before moving, stretch gently, and allow myself to move at a kinder pace. I choose rest without guilt, reminding myself that slowing down is not weakness—it is wisdom.

On harder days, I turn to small comforts that matter: warmth, gentle physiotherapy movements, quiet breathing, journaling, and staying connected with those who understand. Sharing these moments with others who live this reality reminds me that I am not imagining this—and I am not alone.

The weather will change. The moon will rise and fall. My body carries memories of storms I survived. And through it all, I continue to learn how to listen, honor my limits, and move forward with patience, resilience, and deep compassion for myself.

Together we heal. Together we rise.

Together, we are resilient. With warmth,

Sanria
